Ngamiland Basket Weavers

From the natural resource enriched environment in Ngamiland in the nort west part of Botswana came an evolution of a culture based on the basketry craft.

Animals and nature influenced the lifestyle of the people and was depicted in their baskets. Stories of animals seen during hunting by men, and wild berries collected by women influenced the patterns and colours of the beautiful baskets of the region.

Skills passed from mothers to daughters, from generation to generation.

The different patterns and colours such as the forehead of the zebra, tears of the giraffe, flight ot the swallows and running ostrich to mention a few all tell a story which is influenced by the colours, behaviors and beauty of the animals.

The baskets communicate a livelihood centred around the determination, pride, creativity and joy of the people.

The long distance walked in the bush and crossing the mighty Okavango Delta, sandy roads and many days spent out to collect the palm tree leaves to weave, depicts the determination, endurance and perseverance of the women basket weavers in Ngamiland.
